Why Sidecar?

Why choose sidecar?

  • Start your tour without having to worry about: driving, maps, GPS, queues to buy tickets, group visits or long walks.

  • Travel differently with a lot of class and style that only our sidecars can provide. Resulting in a unique and unforgettable experience.

  • Greater freedom to choose your stops and places to visit.

  • Beginning and end of trip in your place of stay in Madeira (Hotel or Cruise Ship), or another of your choice.

Safety and Insurance

Security is one of our major concerns. Our sidecars and drivers are certified to provide you with one of the most amazing experiences of your visit to our Island.

Our tours are recommended for all ages; (children from the age of 7).

All passengers of "Madeira Sidecar Tours" are automatically covered by our Personal Liability Insurance up to €50 000 per event.

"Madeira Sidecar Tours" shall not be liable for any loss or expense directly or indirectly arising from the loss of property, cancellation or reduction of any tour/trip, whatever the cause may be. If the tour/trip is interrupted due to illness or accident, "Madeira Sidecar Tours" will not be responsible for any cost or expense arising therefrom.

The use of helmets is compulsory by law and should always be respected. We offer top quality helmets (approved by EC) and for hygienic reasons a sterilized and disposable cap will be provided for each customer. Our helmets are kept in perfect condition, cleaned and disinfected after every trip.

FAQs

1. What is a sidecar?

It’s a motorcycle with a car attached to its side permanently, making the bike a tricycle for up to three passengers – two on the bike and one on the cart.

2. Is the Sidecar Safe?

Yes, sidecar motorcycles are absolutely safe for adults and for children – our URAL sidecars comply with all the European Community safety regulations. Furthermore, they’re not fast vehicles: they are built for pleasant cruising, not for high-speed driving.

3. Is the sidecar an authorized vehicle?

Sure. The sidecars are legal and regulated by the government; they are not homemade adaptations of conventional bikes. The sidecars are from the 20s (and extremely popular until the 60′s for being a cheap alternative to cars), and since then are produced industrially manufactured by world-class makers such as Harley-Davidson, BMW, URAL and others around the globe.

4. What is the minimum age to go on the bike or sidecar?

The minimum age to ride on a motorcycle (with or without sidecar) in Portugal is 7 years old. In case one of the parents is riding along in the same motorcycle, the child can be as young as 7 years old. In any case, we’ll ask for a written authorization from the parents.

5. Can I drive the Sidecar?

No, an experienced and licensed guide will be driving the sidecar rig. That gives you the chance to see the sights without the distraction of driving.

6. Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes, helmet use is mandatory and you must wear it whenever you’re circulating in the sidecar, but no need to bring or buy a helmet. We provide you with excellent helmets (Approved by the EC), of all sizes and also elegant. Our helmets are maintained in perfect condition and are cleaned and sanitized after each use.

7. Do I need to obtain insurance to do the tour?

No, all passengers are already insured against any incidents on the motorcycle. In case you already have other insurance, such as a travel insurance, it will still be valid.

8. How far in advance should I make my reservation?

The sooner the better. You can even check availability on the same day but keep in mind that these are private and custom tours and therefore we cannot stack you into another tour. Learn about our policy on reservations, changes and cancellations on “booking”.

9. Will my tour be canceled if it rains?

In the unlikely event that the rain appears, you can cancel your tour on the same day and you will be 100% refunded. The choice is really yours (if it ́s not safe, your guide will cancel the tour). Madeira has fantastic weather and very little rain, so far we have canceled an extremely reduced number of tours because of the rain. You can find more information on our reserve policy, modifications and cancellations on “booking”.

10. Can I book tours for groups?

Technically yes, but our tour concept is based on privacy, elegance and service. Custom quality, it is really not possible with large groups, so we prefer not to do tours with more than 2 bikes at a time (3-4 people).
Each sidecar is only able to carry two passengers at any given time.

11. Does Madeira Sidecar Tours offer services other than tours?

We are also available for proms, weddings, birthday parties, and other events at an hourly rate.

12. What type of clothing should I wear?

It’s always a good idea to bring a jacket.

13. Are there any physical restrictions?

Maximum weight per passenger is 128kg (280 lbs).

14. Why choose sidecar?
